West Coast Renewable Energy Roadmap
Date: 2020/21
Client: Confidential
Scope: Kambuku Consulting was contracted by the client to review opportunities for the
installation of renewable energy technologies at their two factories on the South African
West Coast.
Kambuku Consulting undertook an initial screening assessment of the opportunities for a
range of renewable energy technologies at the two factories and on nearby land owned by the
client. The assessment included reviews of the potential for energy generation using biomass
anaerobic digestion and biomass combustion, rooftop and ground mounted solar PV and
onshore wind. The assessments considered the available resource, estimated yields and how
they compared to the client’s daily energy consumption profiles as well as benchmark
costs for the different options.
The screening assessment shortlisted the ground mounted PV and onshore wind options.
Permits required and the associated timelines for these two options were then reviewed. The
net present value of savings for the two options were also estimated based on an
Independent Power Producer procurement model. In addition to the onsite generation and consumption of electricity, the final recommended solution included the wheeling of electricity to the client’s other properties in order to maximise the utilisation of the renewable energy installations.
Next Steps: The client has accepted the recommendations and wishes to run a procurement process for the installation of a 7.5MW ground mounted PV facility (Phase 1) and in due course a 10-20MW wind turbine facility (Phase 2). Kambuku Consulting has been appointed by the client to guide and direct the procurement processes required for Phase 1, including the drafting of the technical aspects of the Expression of Interest and Request for Proposals documentation and assist with the review of the tenders submitted. As the client has not yet decided whether to proceed with the IPP procurement route or to follow and outright ownership route using an EPC (engineer procure and construct) contracting route, if selected, Kambuku Consulting will include both options in the procurement process.
